Did you know it? Octopuses have three hearts. Two of the hearts work exclusively to move blood beyond the animal’s gills, while the third keeps circulation flowing for the organs. The organ heart actually stops beating when the octopus swims, explaining the species’ penchant for crawling rather than swimming, which exhausts them.

While faithful for the breeding season and when the chick is being reared, at other times Emperor penguins have much lower rates of fidelity than smaller species. Did you know it? Hummingbird feathers come in two basic colours: reddish-brown and black. The amazing range of colours we see is caused by granules of melanin and tiny air bubbles in the feathers that refract light to create a metallic sheen. Light must shine on an iridescent feather at the correct angle, or we only see the dull ‘pigment’ colours.
